According to relevant data, in 2004, the total amount of waste sewage discharged in the Pearl River was 18.27 billion tons, of which 13.95 billion tons were discharged into the river, and the waste sewage discharge in the Pearl River Delta accounted for 52% of the total - it is really frightening. So, who soiled our drinking water? Monitoring shows that almost most of the heavy metals, inorganic nitrogen and petroleum in the water body of nearly 6,000 square kilometers of the Pearl River Estuary exceed the standard, the comprehensive pollution index of water quality in most of the waters of Lingdingyang has reached the level of heavy pollution, the inorganic nitrogen in the coastal waters exceeds the four types of seawater quality standards, and the proportion of nutrients is seriously imbalanced... Obviously, this is mainly the fault of corporate pollution.

China is a country with severe water shortages, but most of its precious and limited water resources are under serious threat of pollution, which some experts say has become one of the major challenges facing China in building a moderately prosperous society in the next two decades, and the pollution of the Pearl River is a good example.
